Frequently Asked Questions
What do we do?
The School of Sacred Arts (“SOSA”) at it’s foundation is a Yoga Alliance certified yoga school that offers both 200 hour and 500 hour (advanced) yoga teacher trainings as well as retreats in Bali, Peru, Canada and Thailand, and shares in other locations around the world by special request or invitation (past yoga events have been also been held throughout Japan, Hawaii, and Malaysia).
We also offer a form of coaching called “Mindfulness Mentoring” for individuals and groups (including yoga teachers who are beginning/building their careers) as well as “Ethical Business” consulting, and “Natural Health and Wellness” sessions for those seeking support with their wellbeing. More information can be found on our “Mindfulness Mentoring” page.
More broadly, SOSA brings together many elements beyond yoga (“Sacred Arts”) from various wisdom traditions—both indigenous and modern—into it’s events, including the nature-based and shamanic traditions of North and South America, Buddhism, and modern neuroscience and mindfulness practices. In Peru, where it is legal to do so, we offer plant medicine ceremonies (including Ayahuasca and Huachuma (San Pedro cactus) that are facilitated by experienced, trusted guides.
We have found that the synergy that occurs by combining the strongest elements of these native and contemporary approaches makes for more rapid, powerful, comprehensive, and sustainable growth and transformation.
Please know that what we share on our trainings and retreats is far more than asana practice or ‘yoga as exercise’. If this is what you are looking for, we kindly advise you to direct your search elsewhere. Ours is a holistic approach. Asana, as powerful as it is, is a mere sliver of the overall experience of yoga that you’ll be embarking on with us. Yoga is far broader and deeper than most students, even long-time practitioners, realize. Yes, of course you’ll learn the postures from top to bottom, inside and out, how to teach them, how to guide a class—and you’ll learn it well. More importantly, you’ll learn how to attune to your inner voice, your higher self, and your soul’s deepest wish. When you start to live in this space, your personal karma, your destiny, is allowed to flow, unimpeded.
Yes, we are a school, but please let go of all you associate with the idea of what school is. While there is definitely a structure and a necessary discipline, it is a gentle, nurturing kind, without the expectations and requirements most of us have been conditioned with. Only when experienced at a natural pace can the deeper and subtler learning occur.
We offer finely-tuned, sophisticated programs, complete with high quality teaching materials and ceremonies, guided by a large, stellar team of seasoned teachers and facilitators, many who teach their own teacher trainings and guide their own events with each teacher having a minimum of 15 years (and some up to 30) of experience practicing, teaching, training, and evolving.
Who are we?
SOSA facilitators and teachers come from a variety of backgrounds, offering various perspectives and expertise on a wide array of subjects from the vast realm of all the yogic traditions (classical, tantra/hatha, and modern) as well as Buddhism, shamanism, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and other healing arts.
Many of us are “free spirits” who have moved beyond convention and are thriving in conscious lifestyles of our own creation, and we delight in helping you to connect with—and live from—your deepest, truest self as well.
Who are you?
You are human beings from different nations, ethnic backgrounds, religions, sexual orientations and age ranges who are seeking deeper meaning and a fuller, richer experience of life. You are on an inner journey, often at a crossroads (in transition between school and work, jobs/careers, and/or relationships) and ready to head in a new direction. You are, or soon will be, in a process of transformation, broadening your yoga/mindfulness practices and knowledge. Many of you, of course, are passionate about sharing and teaching yoga yourselves! In short, you are interested in becoming more fully human, and we welcome and honor that as we serve your growth and development.
What style(s) of yoga asana do we teach?
We offer both Hatha/Vinyasa Flow and Yin Yoga as our foundational styles. While based on the movement, breath synchronization and creative expression from the Vinyasa Flow tradition, we also emphasize the experiential and subtle process of tuning into the body-mind and spirit, purifying and working with energetics using the priorities of the Hatha Yoga and Tantric Yoga traditions (including Swara Yoga) in our practice. What this ends up looking like is a relatively slow-moving Vinyasa Flow (where we take more time in the postures than do many current Vinyasa Flow practices) linking the poses together with emphasis on cultivating higher, meditative and balanced states of consciousness with steadiness and ease.
When and where do we offer our events?
We offer two, 200 hour Bali yoga teacher trainings at The Yoga Barn in Ubud, Bali each year, one in March/April and one October/November. Our Bali Yoga Barn event is known as our “flagship operation”.
We also offer an annual 10-day yoga and plant medicine retreat in Peru’s Sacred Valley (which can be used as one module of a 300 hour, advanced yoga teacher training), the next one being August 7 – August 17, 2018. We offer periodic events in Canada (such as our “Yogic Vision Quest”) and Thailand as well, in addition to occasional events in other locations. Please contact us to receive our newsletters and announcements.
Why do we do what we do?
We are strongly guided by the idea of pure service (called “Seva” in Sanskrit) in all of our offerings. We believe that business can and should be a vehicle for Seva in the world, a conduit to bring forth support, joy, and growth for all involved.
In our own way, we are trying to assist the evolution of consciousness by bringing together people from across the globe to share, teach, inspire and serve each other and Mother Earth. We have built this business upon the four pillars of quality, integrity, authenticity, and transparency, with a roof made of expansion, walls of gratitude, and a foundation of love. Within this framework, we celebrate, delight, play, and otherwise have as much fun as possible as one community, one tribe, one sangha, one heart.
How do we do what we do?
Believing that “how you do anything is how you do everything”, everyone on the SOSA team gives everything they have to give with kindness, compassion, empathy, and joy. For us, there is no other way to be in the world but to remain committed to our own growth, relentlessly curious, continuously inspired, and then to share that light with others.
With Much Warmth,
